Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel, at 411 North Rampart Street, is the oldest surviving church building in New Orleans. Originally built in 1826-27 as the Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua, or Mortuary Chapel, to serve as a burial church for victims of yellow fever for nearby St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 and St. Louis Cemetery No 2. The first funeral to take place in the church was that of Dr. Joseph Elbram on All Saints’ Day, 1827. The triple arched facade with covered walkway was designed by Claude Gurlie and Guillot, who were awarded the commission after a competition. In 1903, members of the Spanish Dominican Order removed the dome on top of the belfry and added a steeple in its place.
In 1918, the Roman Catholic Church was renamed Our Lady of Guadalupe Chapel and has since been staffed by the Oblates of Mary. Our Lady of Guadalupe (Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe), also called the Virgin of Guadalupe (Virgen de Guadalupe) is a 16th century Roman Catholic icon depicting an apparition of the Virgin Mary. She is Mexico’s most beloved religious and cultural image, where she known as La Virgen Morena, which means The brown-skinned Virgin.
In the 1930’s, parishioners praying to Saint Jude, the patron for difficult and apparently impossible cases and identified as both Jude of James and Jude Thaddeus in the New Testament, had their intentions answered favorably. This resulted in a regular following of novena services and the erection of a shrine to Saint Jude, to the left of the altar. This statue of Saint Jude, in the Peace Garden, previously stood in front of the St. Jude Memorial Hospital in Kenner, Louisiana. When the hospital was sold to the City in 1985, the name was changed to Kenner Memorial and the City donated the statue to the church.

These 5 pictures were taken at one of my customer’s house where I was doing some repair work last week. Except for the flower shot, they are all from the Mother-in-law’s cottage, which sets apart from the main house. You wouldn’t think so to look at it, but the house is only about 12 years old. It was built out of old recycled cypress lumber, and trimmed out by me!
